New Carpet Frequently Asked Questions

Q Why is my new carpet shedding?
A Most carpets retain some loose fibers after they leave the factory or showroom. These fibers often appear as balls of fluff on the surface of your carpet or in your vacuum cleaner. With time, they will work themselves out and no more shedding will occur.

Q Some tufts are longer than others. What should I do?
A Just snip the end to even the carpet surface. Never yank out long or loose ends, as they can permanently damage your carpet. If a tuft becomes sagged or works loose, simply cut it off and let the surrounding yarn fill in the space.

Q Why does my carpet seem to change color when I look at it from different directions?
A Light reflects differently as the pile is pushed in different directions. Foot traffic generally causes this, and the best solution is to sweep or vacuum the pile in a uniform direction.

Q What can I do about the new carpet smell?
A This harmless odor usually goes away on its own within a week. To minimize it, ventilate the area as much as possible. Open doors and windows, if possible, and use fans to keep air circulating during the installation and for up to 72 hours afterward. Frequently vacuuming your carpet will also help remove the odor.

Q What can I do about static?
A When a room’s relative humidity is very low, a static charge can build up in your carpet, as you walk across it. If it bothers you, a humidifier or other commercially available products can help.

Q How do I get rid of indentations?
A Your carpet pile may compress due to heavy foot traffic or the weight of heavy furniture. Rotating furniture may help reduce the appearance of crushing. For deep indentations, work the carpet pile back into place with the edge of a coin. You can also pass a hot steam iron over the spot, but keep the iron at least four inches above the carpet.
